A neighbourhood kitchen in Ruaka
Delicious meals made with passion, served with a smile.
Mi Gusto started the way most good food places in Kenya start. A griddle, a tea urn, and a queue of people who needed breakfast before the matatu.
The idea has not changed since. Cook food people actually want to eat, cook it properly, charge a price that lets somebody come back on Wednesday as well as Saturday. Everything on the card is either a Kenyan staple done well or a snack we know the estate asks for.
What has grown is the kitchen. Breakfast still runs from early, but now there is pilau on at lunch, wet fry going into the evening, and a rider who knows every gate in Ruaka. On a good Saturday the room is full and the fryer does not stop.
We are not trying to be a fine dining restaurant. We are trying to be the place you trust with your lunch four days a week, and the place you bring people when they visit.

How the kitchen runs
Four things we do not cut corners on, because they are the whole difference between a good plate and a forgettable one.
Bought fresh, daily
Meat, tomatoes, onions and greens come in each morning from Ruaka market. Nothing sits in a freezer waiting for a slow week.
Cooked to order
Wet fry goes in the pan when you order it. That is why a whole fish takes longer than a plate of chips, and why it tastes like it should.
Portioned the same, every plate
The same scoop, the same piece of meat, whether it is a quiet Tuesday morning or a full Saturday night.
Priced to be eaten often
This is a place you can afford on a normal weekday, not only on payday. The prices on the card are the prices at the till.
